Tankless Water Heater Flushing

While the specific setup might vary based on the brand and model of tankless water heater, the steps to flush and clean the heat exchange surfaces will be similar. Our service technicians will first power off and close gas supply to the unit. Once, de-energized, isolate the unit by closing the valves on the cold and hot water lines. Than attach a hose to specific valve and place the other end of the hose into a bucket. Connecting a second hose from another specific valve to your pump outlet. Another hose from the pump inlet to the bucket as well. Pour cleaning solution such as white vinegar or any commercially available cleaners in the bucket. Once the hoses are attached we than turn on the pump and allow the fluid to circulate for 30 to 45 minutes.

After cleaning solution has circulated, we rinse it from the water heater and disconnect the hoses. Before completing the disconnect we also run fresh water in the system. Following a guideline to connecting the correct valves back on and turn on the power and gas. That’s all there is to it!

The Bare Minimum: DIY

As a homeowner there is normally a guideline on DIY maintenances which you can perform. The process is simple enough, and is generally contained in the user manual. If you are a moderately handy homeowner, the DIY tankless flushing for homeowners should be no problem. As long as you follow the guidelines in the manufacturer’s manual.

Tankless Water Heater Maintenance Check-List

Recipe for Longevity

Tankless water heater annual maintenance will provide many years of efficient domestic hot water production. Depending on the water quality of your home, amount of usage and the temperature set point, we can suggest options on maintenance plans which cost cheaper in the long haul.

  1. Flushing the heat exchanger
  2. Cleaning all water filters that may exist in the appliance
  3. Look at the condensate drain system, traps, neutralizers, connections and fittings for any potential problems. (Advise: DO NOT USE brass fittings on the condensate pump lines. These will corrode from the acidic condensate.)
  4. Examine the condition of any flow or temperature sensing devices. Making sure they are clean and free of any scale buildup as well.
  5. Check the venting system, both intake and exhaust, for possible blockages that currently exist or have potential to occur in the future.
  6. Inspecting the condition of the ignitor and flame sensing rod.
  7. Running the appliance through a complete sequence of operation from startup to shutdown to verify everything is working as it is intended.
  8. Last but not the least, gas line inspection looking for possible gas leakage.

You should be good for another year. Be sure to follow through the maintenance on your tankless water heater or enroll in a worry free maintenance plan.
